New Democratic leaders of House and Senate are big Grateful Dead fans
The two highest-ranking Democratic leaders on Capitol Hill have been revealed to be fans of the Grateful Dead.

In a New York Times article that discussed a Democratic fundraiser in Washington, D.C., on January 4th, new Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi's spokeswoman is quoted as saying, "'Ms. Pelosi is a huge Dead fan." The fundraiser cost $1,000 per person, and featured performances by Tony Bennett, Carole King, Wyclef Jean and the surviving members of the Grateful Dead.

Pelosi is a Democratic U.S. Representative from San Francisco, which was the home of the Grateful Dead. She is the first woman to ever hold the office of Speaker of the House.

In early December, a Las Vegas television station ran a piece about incoming Senate Majority leader Harry Reid, in which the Nevada Democrat gave a tour of his house, and showed off his "prized possession" hanging in a bathroom -- a signed poster of the Grateful Dead.

You're entitled. Never said I was politically astute. Just seems like the same ol same ol doesn't and hasn't worked so well and change, even in the form of Bella Pelosi, may produce a turning point in our fukd up world.

"and the surviving members of the Grateful Dead." I didn't think Phil was there, was he? Anyways, it's not just the Democrats though, Ann Coulter is a pretty big Deadhead. http://www.jambands.com/Features/content_2006_06_23.06.phtml Who would have thought she was a Deadhead?

I think she soes a pretty good job asking to be flamed with the shit that comes out of her mouth projected by that Ichibad Crane adams apple. I'll be glad to supply examples of her EXTREME and often racist/bigoted hate mongering if you would like.

better watch out, hate breeds hate. In my life, when I've given into extreme hate, I became equal. So I'm learning (slowly)to pray for my "enemies"
So Johnny B.Goode tonight ;)

Ok I'll be goode : ) but I will say this - if I was a Christin I'd be pretty damn upset about what she says while claiming to be a representetive of that faith.

Again. A post that assumes it will appeal to a majority of Heads. It might make it to majority, but profiling and stereotyping are just plain wrong. Furthermore anybody that would get excited about Weir and pals hob-nobbing with the DC goober smoochers, should have second thoughts.

Even if you think Ann Coulter is the bitch from hell, she is not wrong abouth the way the Dead have supported their causes over the years. Give a listen to both Weir and Garcia during the Festival Express movie and you'll quickly see that they were no fans of entitlement thinking.

Further, Garcia was exactly right when he suggested tha voting for the lesser of two evils was still evil. The Dead overall had and have a legitimate rap on issue oriented politics like de-criminalization of drugs, and the environment. But overall the band has played it's life out as entrepreneurs that know fiscal conservatism and a reduced regulatory climate benefitted their business world.

...and seeing today has been a kinder, more genteel board, I'll not bite some unfortunate liberal's head off and piss down their neck. Have a nice day.

The post was intended to hope that women are breaking the political barrier which I believe will offer a better kind of government (kinder and gentler like todays boards)regardless of being Dems/Reps and that the Dead get a little mainstream PR. Thats all Earl B. No soapbox here as politics is the quickest way to get boards into a funk (that and post 77!). Peace out brother man.

Jody: I'm hip to that, in fact I believe that there's many areas of government that could benefit from less testosterone and more estrogen. I believe that most women have a stronger, purer and firmer belief system than men in similar positions. They appear to be more difficult to corrupt and perhaps will view issues in a purer light rather than having outside influences color their thinking.

As far as Nancy Pelosi goes, her history as a mega-fundraiser has me thinking she's too close to the money, the pure political aspect of it all. Time will tell, but my call is that she succumbs to politics as usual when the favors get called in. It's a trap that's very difficult to escape from.

Hmmm....tony D.C. democrats getting fat and sloppy drunk for two large per couple, fake-smiling and back-slapping each other as the deal-cutting commences while a few graying ex GD-ers plink away harmlessly in the background like trained monkeys...

I'll pass.

The fact that Reid, Coulter and Pelosi all listen to the Dead (or claim to, I have no idea whether they do or not)does nothing to change the fact that I have to get up and go to work in the morning, so how relevant can it be?

Nancy Pelosi listening to the Dead means nothing.
Some people have invented this little Bill and Ted scenario centered around the Grateful Dead. Sorry to burst your bubbles, but you're living in fantasy land.

Enjoy the music, it is some of the best ever made.

I find it hard to believe either Mrs. Pelosi or Mrs. Coulter actually "get it".
I'll have to think about old Bill.C. for a minute?

Am I wrong in saying you either get it or you don't?

just because you like the dead does not mean you are a full blown out hippy, with all the values behind it. Some just enjoy the music, some like the music and the ideas. We know which she does.

they "get" the music, politics aside. So do I and I enjoy lot's of pundit's on AM talk radio...Initials only (!) Dr.MS, RL, SH
I even enjoy the MUSIC of Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young and a few others when they shut up and sing.
